Diabetes recipes: Basic guidelines for cooking delicious and nutritious meals for the diabetics

There are different diabetes recipes and many delicious meals can be made for each diabetic condition. Whether you are looking for information for a gestational diabetes recipe, type 2 diabetes recipe or even child diabetes diet recipe, it all boils down to preparing meals that should contain vegetables, fruits and starches but keeping the use of simple sugars to the minimum.

Eating healthily is of utmost importance to the diabetics, as maintaining blood glucose levels and keeping their weight in check are the two key factors. Moreover, eating healthy food can help lower the risk of heart diseases that are commonly faced by a diabetic.

In order not to compromise the nutritional value called for in any diabetes recipes, there are some basic guidelines that can help to make the meals nutritious as well as delicious.

If the recipe calls for oil, butter or shortening, these can be substituted with vegetable oil spray (canola or olive oil can be a healthy alternative). When buying meat, the lean cut, such as sirloin steak (known for its very low fat content) is recommended for the diabetes diet.

To keep meals healthy, try to stir-fry, broil or roast the meat. As for chicken and turkey, try buying them skinless or remove the skin before cooking. Vegetables and fish are usually eaten with butter, try using lemon/lime as seasoning instead.

To help lower the fat and not causing much dietary changes, take cereal with skim milk or 1% of other milk. Eat whole grain bread and cereal as often as possible, as these provide a host of nutrients and they are a great source of carbohydrates.
