Diabetes Prevention: One way is to ensure that your weight falls within the recommended "weight ranges" for your sex and height

Note: Weight is only one part of the entire diabetes prevention equation. The body composition i.e. the amount of muscle compared to fat in the body, is even more important.

Fat stored around the abdomen causes more serious health problems than fat stored on the hips and thighs.

Women have the tendency to gain weight around the hips and thighs (safer areas) while men tend to put on weight around the chests and waists (danger areas).

Abdominal fat is known to be in association with an increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, high levels of blood fats and diabetes.

To check if your weight is in the healthy range in proportion to your height, you can take an indication from your BMI (Body Mass Index).

It is obtained by dividing a person's weight by their height squared, i.e. if you measured your weight in kilograms and your height in meters, the units of measure for BMI are kg/m2. On the other hand, if your weight is measured in pounds and height in inches, the units of measure for BMI are lb/inch2.

The tables provided below can give you an indication of the risks of disease and health complications, such as diabetes, for various BMI ranges and waist sizes.

BMI - for weight in Kg and Height in Meters

BMI
(kg/m2)
Weight Level Risk Level
for waist less than
or equal to
40 In. (men) or
35 In. (women)
Risk Level
for waist greater than
40 In.(men) or
35 In. (women)
18.5 or less Underweight --- NA
18.5 - 24.9 Normal --- NA
25.0 - 29.9 Overweight Increased High
30.0 - 34.9 Obese High Very High
35.0 - 39.9 Obese Very High Very High
40 or greater Extremely Obese Extremely High Extremely High

Please Note: The table above assumes that the units of measure for BMI are kg/m2. That is, the person's weight is measured in kilograms and their height is measured in meters.

BMI - for weight in Pounds and Height in Inches

BMI
(Lb/Inch2)
Weight Level Risk Level
for waist less than
or equal to
40 In. (men) or
35 In. (women)
Risk Level
for waist greater than
40 In.(men) or
35 In. (women)
40.7 or less Underweight --- NA
40.7 - 54.99 Normal --- NA
55 - 65.99 Overweight Increased High
66 - 76.99 Obese High Very High
77 - 87.99 Obese Very High Very High
88 or greater Extremely Obese Extremely High Extremely High

Please Note: The table above assumes that the units of measure for BMI are Lb/inch2. That is, the person's weight is measured in Pounds and their height is measured in inches.

  • All weights for women include an allowance of 3 pounds (1.4 Kg) for indoor clothing and shoes. If naked, take 3 pounds (1.4 Kg) off the above measurements.
