What is Diabetes?
The word "diabetes" originated from the Greek "diabainein", which literally means "passing through" or "siphon", referencing one of the main symptoms of Diabetes - excessive urine discharge.
Diabetes is a condition where the body is not able to regulate the level of glucose, which is a sugar in the blood, causing in too much glucose being present in the blood.
Glucose is the simplest form of sugar and is vital for providing energy for cells to function and grow.
It travels via the blood stream to all the muscles and organs in the body and acts as a fuel in order that the organs can continue to function properly.
The safe or normal level for glucose in the blood is between 3.5 and 7.8 milli-moles per liter (mmol/l).
Should there be an excess of glucose in the blood, the excess is then processed by the liver where it is converted into a form whereby it can be stored for future use.
Diabetes occurs when there is excess glucose in the blood, or when the body is not able to regulate this excessive levels of blood glucose.
This results in too much glucose being present in the blood and over a period of time, this condition may cause serious complications, such as damaged eyes, nerves, kidneys, foot problems, heart diseases, impotence and stroke.
